Personal Adornment Day & Make-up Extravaganza

This past Thursday, Hass Gallery was host to the 7th annual Personal Adornment Day & Make-up Extravaganza. This event was wearable art, make-up and fashion exhibition put on by students in sculpture, theater and fabric design classes at the university. The works and make-up art were displayed is the form of a runway show, accompanied by artist chosen music preceded by the information on the piece and an artist statement.

There was a wide variety of memorable works, made from everything from traditional fabrics to Q-tips to pill bottles. Some of the works, such as Sunrise by Nicole Patton, were very traditional is design, although still very beautiful. Others, such as Sarah Sallade's Octopus, were much more silly and abstract compared to traditional clothing, making them seem more like costumes. The models did a fantastic job with acting, making the artist's intentions much more visible.

Two of the works that stood out to me the most were Megan Combs' Gown and The Photographer's Armor. Gown was a very simple dress that was many yards long. Despite it's unusual length, it was very elegant. Her other work, The Photographer's Armor, was constructed of over 1000 metal film canister rings to form somewhat of a chain mail that covered the model's face, and also formed wrist cuffs. The work looked very interesting on the model, dressed completely in black.

I can’t even begin to explain how inspiring this work has been for me to see and hear about. The work really brought me out of a slump and made me want to actually work on art again. Although I have to admit that printmaking wasn’t close to the art techniques her work inspired.

Since watching her presentation and looking at her pieces I really wanted to work more with line again and be able to use stitching and painting to really make something that feels like a piece I would be proud to say is mine. I love having the ability in my art project to just work without the need to put much thought in the final piece.

Professor Endicott used stitching in a way that it acts as paint. It’s used both as filler with thick strong lines and an accent to ink work on the cloth she would use as her base for any piece. Using layering and such fragile materials to make them strong and bold made the presentation very inspiring and almost emotional. She began using pure representatives in her art, such as young children’s clothing, always white or an off white. The bold red and browns made the pieces almost grotesque both in the way the shapes where made and accented and how they were hung to display.

Personal Adornment Day

Out of all of the performances and pieces presented in the BU wearable art show I think my favorite was the pond goddess. The model was very good with the piece when working with it to show the movement in it. I feel it was very creative and very well made.

I think a close second would have to be the galaxy collection. From what I could tell from where I was standing all of the pieces in the collection was hemmed nicely and fit the models very well. I loved the attitude in the models the artist chose. Even with the calmer models I feel it showed the various moods that the universe also shows.

I think I was most impressed with the dress made out of q-tips. I can only imagine the time and effort required to put that dress together. I’m sure making it function and the requirements to keep it on her body was a nightmare. I think the originality for this piece and the materials used for it remind me of a dress made of feminine pads two years ago.

I wish the performances were a little more in depth. They both clearly demonstrated their point, yet it would have been great to see more structure in the first act at least.

For next year I really feel that it should be held in a large area. I’ve attended every show since I was in one in 2009 and every year the attendance has grown.

Personal Adornmanet Runway Show

The event I chose to attend was the runway show in Hass on Thursday, March, 31. The event showcased different wearable designs. These designs were made from materials not usually used in making clothing.

I thought the range of designs were very interesting. I prefered designs that looked they could be worn everyday to more abstract peices. I at least hope no one would walk around with a box on their head, they would run into almost everything. However, the more abstract outfits conveyed a stronger message.

I thought it was very interesting how the show was like wearing sculptures. I would never think to make an outfit out of anything except fabric and thread. I thought it was amazing how my emotions changed with the different peices, music, and character of the models. I would like to attend the event again next year to see what new and creative things walk down that hallway.

Personal Adornment Day, Seth Trump

I attended the Personal Adornment runway show. The runway show consisted of different types of costumes or wearable sculptures accompanied by music. The wearable objects could have been made by anything and worn anywhere on the body which surprised me. I was expecting objects that resembled something like a shirt or pants or something but certain people really went all out.

There were many that stood out to me while others tended to look like they were just for fun. There were two that resembled each other that I liked. They both resembled dresses. One was made of latex gloves and what looked to be wire and the other had strands of popsicle sticks that were broken that also was on wire. There was also a pair of glasses made out of bullets that I thought was pretty clever.

Overall I thought the runway show was fun. It showed different types of sculpture that you don’t always see and I thought it was cool way to show student art. The only thing I wasn’t sure if I liked is it seemed like some people just got in and took it as a joke, which it kind of is in the first place. But I feel like that kind of made me less interested in the show as a whole sometimes.

Personal adornment day and make-up extravaganza was put together very nicely. I enjoyed all the different types of ideas that were contributed from all the students that participated in the event. I really enjoyed the set up of the event down the hallway and the way the chairs were positioned so that everyone could see the entertainers.

The piece that really caught my attention and heart was by Rachel Higgins, I was touched by the fact that she had the courage and strength to be able to endure her parents both having cancer and being there with them, The way she incorporated the bandage wraps wrapped around her body and showed the blood marks from the wounds that her parents had to endure really touched deep in my heart. Seeing her walking down the isle and her walking to the beating of the music of a heart beep machine made me tear up and I felt as though she paid attention to every detail and showed how she felt during the time her parents went through their hardship. I feel as though having the iv bag with her holding onto also had a very huge impact on viewer opinion.

Another piece I really enjoyed was by a guy I didn’t catch his name but he was a window washer, and I thought it brought a lot of comedy for the event. I really enjoyed how you felt as though he was the happiest person in the world. I liked how he had the actual window mock up with different marks on it with the window washer and the outfit complimented his window box, his music complimented his attire also very well.

Overall I believe the event was another success as in previous years, you can tell a lot of students dedicated their time and effort into creating some of these amazing outfits that people could model for them, the make-up artist were huge contributors also and I think they did an amazing job in the background. I can’t wait to see what people come up with next year.

Personal Adornment Runway Show

I attended the Personal Adornment Runway Show. This was an interesting perspective of student art that I had never explored before. Rachel Harris’s piece was a representation of the effect that media plays in people’s lives. She created outfits that represented the negative effects that Hollywood has on young teenagers lives. There were two people in this showing, one with a box on her head and covered in blood, the other with pill bottles strewn all over him, also covered in blood. This was representing the negative role models and activities that teens idolize and get into.

Rebecca Weller had put together a piece showing the dependency of others attention. She created a dress that was very low cut, and quite short. It was created of an interesting material that looked like tulle. Her color choice was peculiar because she chose black and blue. This symbolizing that even though it is beautiful it is still damaging to one self’s purity, and morality, black and blue being bruised.

Amber created a piece titled “the wish snatcher”. In this piece she wore a long dress, and a long veil. Silver stars were strewn in her hair representing the night sky. Her veil was long and had written wishes attached to it as to be acting as a net so that it caught the wishes that people have cast.
