Becca Vernon: Assignment 2

Overall, Calire Rau's exhibition, Booby Traps, was very interesting. Walking in, I felt like it had a simple layout, with prints along the walls, organized by mediums used, and 3 sculptures layed out on the floor. First looking at all the pieces I found it generally difficult to find a deeper meaning besides maybe a feeling of "being trapped" in all these pieces. I'm really glad we got to hear her speak about the pieces because I was able to understand what she was feeling with each piece.

I enjoy the simplicity of the piece, The Fatted Calf. The light pink and yellow/beige of the ink. The pink makes the calf have a more innocent look. The light yellow dripping off the calf kind of has a creepy feeling, because it's so light it's almost an afterthought, but bacause the entire composition is so simple, is still very prominent.

After listening to Rau speak, I found myself enjoying this piece, The Fatted Calf a lot more. Rau spoke about trying to "make things go down easier," like putting the fatty substance on cow meat, or really adding a little bit of something good to something bad to make it seem a little better than it is. Rau said she has a hardtime with things like this and think I can relate to that. I can't stand it when people try to sugar-coat things that should just be said straight out. Overall, I really enjoyed this peice, as well as the whole exibit.
