When i first walked into the exhibition, i didnt quite know what to think. It took me a while to realize that all of the pieces of work were either types of booby traps or a form of combat weapons of some sort. Each peice had realistic properties, they looked like the object, but at the same time were not realistic because of color, pattern, and of course materials. There were framed silkscreen prints hanging around the gallery, along with some three dimensional structures stuck in there too. My first impression was that it was depressing, but when Claire Rau talked about each peice in a fun and humerous way, it gave me a total different aspect of the gallery.
I didnt really have a favorite peice of work, but the one that caught my eye the most would probably have been the Leg-Hold Traps. These multiple traps were made to look like real bear traps or whatever, even using metal to add more reality. There is a red splash of what I am sure is to be interpretted as blood in the middle of each trap.
I think these peices are mostly self explanatory. Claire Rau was trying to make her booby traps look as real as possible, as well as get them to work like the real thing. During Rau's childhood, she was interested in combat movies and stories, which inspired her theme. To me, this peice fits the theme of "booby traps" the best, and I find it to be the most interesting peice as far as the way it is put together. Being so, I still enjoyed the entire gallery and was very interested in her thoughts!
